Music FTW: “Confess” by Twin Shadow

Do you like 80′s music that has been amped up and upgraded into the most pure essence of floaty and fun music you’ll ever hear? If you answered yes, maybe, I don’t know, or any combination of those then you owe it to yourself to check out “Confess” by Twin Shadow.  I went into this album knowing little about the artist or the music itself.  The album looked interesting and a friend recommended it to me so I decided it’d be perfect to listen to for the next week.  Little did I know that I’d be listening to what ultimately sounds like a perfectly produced and re-mastered mix of the best 80s music. The best part is that it’s all original, it’s not as though Twin Shadow took songs from that era and reworked them, instead they’ve created his own sound that has a heavy influence of 80′s love music and the resulting music is something strange and beautiful.

Twin Shadow is an amazing artist who uses the influences to his own strengths and creates this “summer love album”, as some call it, with surprising results.  “Golden Light” opens up the album with a relaxed calm vibe that mixes into Twin Shadow asking his love a question. “If I chase after you does that mean that it’s true?”.  It’s very old-school love music-esque but it just feels incredibly right.  “Five Seconds” is probably the song that most people can listen to and immediately feel the 80′s bleeding through.  Twin Shadow wrote the album after a series of motorcycle rides he took and this song encompasses the thrill of the ride and the adrenaline rush that comes with the ride.  In “Run My Heart” Twin Shadows calls out that no one runs his heart and therefore no one has the ability to make decisions for him, a callback to the freedom and openness. It all ends with “Be Mine Tonight” and (the hidden track) “Mirror in the Dark” which longingly call out to those around in search of something enigmatic.  That’s probably the best word to describe the album, it’s an enigmatic 80′s callout that can be certainly heard as a summer love album but will be sticking around for a good long while.
